Notion Motion - Olafur Eliasson
Olafur Eliasson is a Danish-Icelandic artist known for sculptures and large-scale installations that employ elemental materials to enhance the viewer’s experience. For years, he has transferred natural phenomena such as water, light, wind, temperature and movement into the artistic context using simple technical aids. Eliasson always includes the visitors in the exhibition and their senses, reflection, memory and interpretations in his work. With their presence, the visitors change the installations and influence the sequence of occurrences, and they become aware of their perception and of themselves as perceivers. ‘The audience is the piece’, says the artist, ‘because everything else is in flux.’ This relationship and the way it determines the work have become widely accepted in the art world, as the understanding of interactive artworks has shifted over the years from a technical point of view towards a social, cultural and political one.
Notion Motion is part of the collection of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and on loan for the DEAF exhibition.
